  4. Country Description:  Malta is a small, developed, democratic Mediterranean
  5. island nation, positioned as a cultural and political stepping-stone between
  6. Europe and North Africa.  Tourist facilities of all categories are widely
  7. available.
  8.  
  9. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  Visas are not required for
  10. tourist stays of up to three months.  For further information concerning
  11. entry requirements for Malta, travelers can contact the Embassy of Malta at
  12. 2017 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, tel: (202) 462-3611,
  13. or the nearest Maltese Consulate in Boston, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City,
  14. Missouri, New York, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Ft. Lauderdale, St. Paul, or
  15. San Francisco.

  17. Medical Facilities:  Medical care is available. Doctors and hospitals often
  18. expect immediate cash payment for health services.  U.S. medical insurance
  19. is not always valid outside the United States.  Travelers have found that in
  20. some cases, supplemental medical insurance with specific overseas coverage
  21. has proven to be useful.  Information on specific health matters is
  22. available through the Centers for Disease Control's international travelers
  23. hotline at (404) 332-4559.

  25. Crime Information:  Malta has a low rate of violent crime.  Incidents of
  26. pickpocketing and purse-snatching are relatively rare; however, break-ins
  27. and thefts from parked vehicles and thefts of cars are on the increase.  The
  28. loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to
  29. the local police and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  U.S. citizens
  30. can refer to the Department of State's pamphlet "A Safe Trip Abroad" for
  31. ways to promote a more trouble-free journey.  The pamphlet is available from
  32. the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office,
  33. Washington, D.C. 20402.

  35. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  36. which they are traveling.  In Malta, penalties for possession, use, and
  37. dealing of illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail
  38. sentences and fines.

  40. Registration:  U.S. citizens who register in the Consular Section of the
  41. U.S. Embassy can obtain updated information on travel and security in Malta.
